So What Does It Take To BE a Project Board Member?

The Senior Management role for project governance

If you are a senior manager in your organization, or take part in Senior Management teams responsible for directing projects, then this article is aimed at you. It is especially focused on those responsible for managing organisational change effectively and looking for an effective project management method.

I can't underestimate the importance of handling change for business success in your organization. Departmental heads, business area owners, functional heads, those responsible for sales and marketing, or those who provide resources, human or otherwise, need to read on...

Neither can I remember a time when it was more vital for an organization to become fit and effective than the present, the darned mess we're all in due to the banking fiasco's are taking their toll on businesses growth and productivity.

Competition is fierce, and being top dog is a survival issue...working hard is no longer good enough. If you and your organization need to manage change initiatives more effectively to drive through business benefits - then this is for you.

One of the most, if not the most effective way of realising real business benefit is through project management. But there's more.

You see, for projects to have a chance of success, they need strong and focused control from the top. I'm talking about the Project Board. So called because they and they alone, are responsible for proving direction, control, and authority.

A typical Project Board will comprise THREE focused roles:

  • The Project Board Executive (Business Assurance - the owner of the Business Case
  • The Senior User - champion of the user-related requirements

  • The Senior Supplier - champion of project resources and technical integrity

If you are to be a member of the Project Board, then as an absolute minimum you will need a high level view of the essential features and functions of the PRINCE2® method.

Why?

Because it provides for all types of organisations - public and private sector, whether large and small, with a consistent, generic, approach to managing change through projects.

What you will require is a 'Boardroom Briefing', the objectivews of which are:

  • To understand how the Project Board must tailor your organisation's capabilities with regard to a set of project critical success factors and against a "best practice" model of project management
  • To understand the benefits of using PRINCE2® to deliver your project endevours
  • To understand how the Project Board must tailor PRINCE2® to your organisation as a basis for your project management environment
  • Be able to formulate a compelling Business Case which will justify the establishment of a PRINCE2® approach in order to deliver project/change management in your business
  • Conceive the “way forward”
To achieve all those objectives, my Project Board Briefing will give you the governance skills so that you will fully understand the answers to the following questions:
  • What is expected of me?
  • What should I expect of the Project Manager?
  • How do I know if the Project Manager is applying PRINCE2 appropriately?
  • How do I delegate authority - yet keep control?
  • What decisions am I expected to make?
  • What information will help me make decisions?
  • What constitutes an effective Project Board?
  • How do we Tailor PRINCE2®?
In summary, you will learn to apply careful and skillfull control to the PRINCE2® project management controlled environment, by ensuring that senior managers participate as Project Board members and take the lead to become active champions of the project environment.
